Now that I am an "old fart.." I can see what Martin Luther King was talking about when he said, "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." This was actually first said by Theodore Parker, a Unitarian minister, reformer and abolitionist in the nineteenth century, who was admired by Martin Luther King. That phrase was a leap of faith toward the American promise so eloquently penned by the founding documents. A hundred years later, it was entered again into the arduous debate to keep us focused on the importance of that leap of faith... the essential trust in each other, that... somehow, through all of the stuggle... we, too, would set our path toward justice. And it emerges again today, with the evidence of the leap of faith that justice for all may actually prevail. That is what elections do.

Non-White

The recent flaps around "racial" statements lately put a spotlight on the following fact: there is no true racial diversity in this country... not yet. We still live in a "white, non-white" culture. Almost every cultural leader has recently demonstrated his/her ignorance of any culture but their own.. exposing their deep, desolate "whiteness" that they hold up as some sort of American beacon, or standard that all others must be judged by, including other "white" people. That is why only one word- "white"- is needed for a racial classification on the census, why the media "naturally" has only "white" people on the set, to the point where "non-white" really sticks out, why schools continue to feature history from a "white" perspective, despite the advances of the internet that obviously proves otherwise, and the laziness of "white" people to interact with "non-whites,"and why most "white" people have only seen/been educated with/live with ... other "white" people. Ask yourself, do you have "non-white" neighbors.. and do you know them by name? Do you work with "non-whites" and can honestly dialog with them? Do you seek "non-white" knowledge on the internet, and discuss it with your "white" friends?
Do you actively try to do your homework about political issues and history that would bring us together as americans? Do you celebrate "non-white" cultural events with knowledge that goes deeper than the latest hip-hop stereotypes or tv reality shows? Have you attempted to learn a "non-white" language in a conversational way?

The good news is that progress is definitely happening. A mere quip in the single-scotch room of the congressional elite a few years back would have been unnoticed entirely.
Today it is a major flap among "white folks." This is progress. A black president that rises above the racial flap and keeps his eye on the prize of moving forward. This is progress. Blogs, books, and banter that is discussing what was, a few years back, entirely taboo about racial matters. This is progress. The emergence of young folks who don't buy into "being american" means trying to spread the "white" culture. This is progress. A black president, clearly elected by the majority of the people. This is progress.
When I see snippets of americans trying to understand each other, and reaching out to each other for knowledge and strength, I am witnessing Dr. Martin Luther King's dream being, ever so slowly, realized.

Chapter One

This December, we the people again observed this political reality.
Money controls government, and is administered by old white men.

Since day one, in the USA, the only valid power, expressed by the vote of the congress, has been reserved for wealthy, "white," men.
Period. To change this is nearly impossible, but it will happen when greed reaches a threshold of utter destruction of
the trade value of the dollar, rendering it useless.

But, as a liberal, I know and I have witnessed the inevitable progress that is also built into our country's fabric.

Women and "minorities" (a silly race-based term in itself) have the right to vote, despite pressures of cheating to strip them of any real power. African-americans have attained the right to use the same toilets, go to the same restaurants, despite the constant pressure of resegregation.

And it will continue. Our founding documents are, indeed, revolutionary.

In that tradition, do not be naive to think that substantial change will occur with the pull of one lever in one election. Look how many decades of real struggle it took to end slavery, to begin women's right to vote, to desegregate schools. It is a constant political and economic struggle. It will take that same, consistant, insistant, resistant push against old, "white," monied power to bring about real reforms.. healthcare, banking, equality. But that fight has been going on since way before this young, 225-year political experiment was born.

So, liberals, let us fight on, let us not let the past swallow us into despair, but platform us and move us forward to what we know is a better day for all. History teaches us that a struggle for justice and freedom is long, hard, and valuable.

I have seen, like never before, the attention of the workings of congress by their constituants.. that is progress. I have seen the people respond to stealing of elections by organizing and showing up in numbers that cannot be
disputed..that is progress. I have seen the OWM, (old "whiteman" money), capitulate with a blizzard of greed; they
know, as we all do, that change is coming.. so they hoard the past, fearing the inevitable future.

I know that if we liberals pull together, like individual oars in the stormy waters of struggle for justice, we will move this giant ship of America forward... and I hear Lady Liberty with the chant of stroke... stroke..stroke.. stroke...

When I added the four categories for Max Baucus, WHO IS A DEMOCRAT.. The Pacs and Individual contributions
of Finance/Insurance/Real Estate, and Health Categories, the total came to $4,494,960.

The Current Population of the USA, googled, is 304,059,724. That means that the lobbyist for these two groups thinks that
your health is worth about 15cents to Max Baucus to deny you public health care. Do the math to your own satisfaction.. This,
of course, is approximate and, yes, it takes doing some homework.. But 15 cents is all it takes to get Baucus to deny you
coverage? I would like to think that my life is worth more than that. So, pick a committee member, track the contributions,
then check his/her voting record.. then CONTACT THEM AND SAY SOMETHING ABOUT IT!! Spread the word.. we must
fight NOW to finish this health care reform.

Current insurance costs per year.. look yours up. Are you satisfied with the price for the gamble of coverage?? Mine has gone up at least 40 percent in the last eight years. Heck, there have been years where the hike in premiums outstripped my raises and my net check has gone DOWN. How is this better? Now I pay over $6,000 for single coverage that is not guaranteed! How is this better? I would gladly pay $2400 a year for single payer and keep the rest of my earnings. So if you are full-time, check into how much the TOTAL premium is for your benefit package.. bet it is a ton of money! Out of YOUR earnings. And going up as we speak. How is this better? So get up and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. You know what to do; it got Obama elected and Democrats into the majority. Now is the time, now is our moment. Single payer health care now. EMAIL AND CALL YOUR CONGRESSIONAL REPRESENTATIVE! Organize campaigns with your friends. Let's do this.

Long time, everybody! Jazzmarycam Lives!! The first one, although a little rough around the edges, is about the Pride Parade in Columbus, Ohio last June... here it is. These are some of my friends around town.. Jim, a great patron of the live arts... Matt, in town to star in the local production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch at Club Diversity Theatre, which, btw, was excellent!... Brett, a good friend and Bass Drum Banger!... and, of course, James Blackmon of James Club 88... which has it's own Jazzmarycam feature to be posted soon.. have fun and come back often!!

Saturday night was a BLAST at Club D! First of all, Wahru was on hand with her magic drum fingers. And who also showed up? None other than Mary Hough. Her guitar skills will be featured on a vid that I am finishing and will upload soon. Needless to say, a full jam erupted when Debé joined in with her sultry vocals. WHAT FUN! We received numerous loud, standing ovations!
